Olifantsriver Estuary

Papendorp lies nearby, at the mouth of the Olifants River, and was originally known as Viswater. Fishing boats, nets and bokkoms are characteristic of its cultural landscape.

The greatest concentration of birds can be found within the Olifants River estuary, an important habitat for thousands of migratory birds. More than 200 bird species have been recorded here and in summer the estuary’s bird population can swell to over 15 000 individuals. Find yourself with the Labyrinth of Memories just outside the small fishing village. Built by hand with stones from the original “Viswater House” of Lady Fryers and surrounding area.
