Description
Papendorp lies nearby, at the mouth of the Olifants River, and was originally known as Viswater. Fishing boats, nets and bokkoms are characteristic of its cultural landscape.
The greatest concentration of birds can be found within the Olifants River estuary, an important habitat for thousands of migratory birds. More than 200 bird species have been recorded here and in summer the estuary’s bird population can swell to over 15 000 individuals. Experience the fauna and flora of the estuary by taking the short boardwalk hike to the Bird Hyde
Find yourself with the Labyrinth of Memories just outside the small fishing village. Built by hand with stones from the original “Viswater House” of Lady Fryers and surrounding area. This Labyrinth was built with gratitude for the past and our ancestors, hope for the future and our children. Contact Suzanne du Plessis for more information 027 215 1685
Be more adventurous and active and take your Stand up paddle or canoe and explore the canals of the Olifants River mouth. If you are lucky you can experience a true weskus catch of the day by local fishermen!
