Description
The Old Village on Modderfontein Farm (circa 1725) is a unique country retreat with beautifully restored self-catering cottages and a period country Restaurant and Pub, located in a magnificent setting on an organic citrus farm outside the village of Citrusdal, 2 hours from Cape Town along the scenic N7.
This historic gem was once the center of life and commerce in the valley until Citrusdal was developed around 1920, and is one of the few authentic farm villages in the country. Modderfontein has twenty historic structures, the oldest being the large walled cattle kraal and the first house (the Smithy), built-in 1725. Thomas Bain lived in another, Bain’s Cottage when he built Grey’s Pass through the farm in 1857. Sympathetically restored, there is a choice of five heritage cottages in all, each with its own rich history and fine Cape antiques.
Enjoy fine food and drink with the locals at the period Restaurant and Pub, then simply relax and absorb the peace and rich sense of the history of this very special place. Dogs are very welcome when accompanied by responsible owners.
The renovated cottages have been individually furnished and decorated with understated elegance, complementing the character of each. All have fully equipped kitchens, spotless bathrooms, fireplaces, air-conditioning, and satellite television. Solar power provides electric light and hot water. Quality mattresses, crisp linen, fluffy towels, and attention to detail complete the picture and ensure a comfortable stay.
The restaurant, with its original Oregon floors and high beamed ceiling, offers elegant dining, also catering for functions. A friendly mix of locals and tourists enjoy the seasonal menu and local wines. The front stoep with its stunning views over the valley is a summer treat, while the log fire adds warmth to the historic setting in winter.
The pub, a Victorian/Regency design by William Volbrecht, also sports a large-screen television and stocks a wide variety of beers, ciders, liquor, and wines. Pub lunches are available at designated times. We are open Tuesday to Saturday for light refreshments from 10:00 to 14:30, and for lunch from 12:30 to 14:30. Dinner (Tuesday to Saturday) is served from 19:00 and on Sundays, the buffet is ready from 12:30. We accept MasterCard and Visa, and our dress code is smart but casual.
The venue and facilities are also available for functions, wedding receptions and special occasions
