Weskus Winter Travel with Kids
We all love to take road trips in the summer with the kids, but have you considered all of the fun you can also have on a winter trip? There are so many things to see and do along the West Coast in the winter, and this can be a great time to travel. After all, except for the flower season, fewer people travel in the wintertime, so there isn’t nearly as much traffic on the roads to have to deal with. If you are interested in the idea of taking your kids on a winter road trip or vacation on the west coast, here are some tips to help make it loads of fun for everyone.
The wildflowers begin flowering first in the north in Namaqualand in late July/early August and then roll out southwards, through Nieuwoudtville and the Cederberg towards the South, at the beginning of September. The best way to approach the flowers is from the north, as in spring, the sun is in the north. The flowers only come out in the sun, and always face the sun. So, if you are going right up north, drive there first, and then wend your way slowly down south.
Pack the Right Clothing – You never know what the conditions are going to be like in the winter, especially on the west coast. The forecast could call for sun, but you end up in the middle of a huge rain storm. So, if you are going to be traveling in the winter months, be prepared. Make sure that you have the right clothing packed, including heavy coats and boots. While in the car, the kids can wear lighter clothing that is going to be more comfortable.
Pack Books and Toys – Younger kids tend to become bored on long car rides, and they are more interested in the destination than what they can see along the way. Make sure that you pack plenty of books, as well as small toys and games that they can play with while you are on the road. The towns on the West Coast can be far apart and it will help to keep them busy.
If you plan to visit in mid-September, then enjoy the south around the West Coast National Park, Yzerfontein, and Darling as it is too late for the north. The flower season is dependent on the winter rains, the wind, and other weather factors, and the displays vary from place to place each season. The towns are all small, so finding your way around is very easy and the locals are hospitable.
Plan Lots of Activities – There are so many winter activities for families to enjoy, and you can pack a lot of things into a weekend getaway. Plan some activities that the whole family can do together. Don’t forget about the free activities, such as winter hikes and Weskus flower on display as far as your eyes can see. The best way to have a well-rounded trip would be to include the West Coast National Park for its Postberg flowers, wildlife, and birding, and some of the charming West Coast Towns like Paternoster, Yzerfontein, and Saldanha, for their laid-back atmosphere and fresh seafood, the Cederberg for its rock art and mountain beauty, Wuppertal for its interesting history and Citrusdal for the beautiful orange orchards.
Take Plenty Weskus Photos – You are making some great memories with your family that is going to last a lifetime. Preserve those memories by taking loads of photos while you are on all family vacations, including winter road trips. Never miss any of the best moments!
